Year after year, people from all over the world visit the Québec Winter Carnival to enjoy fun experiences for all ages. During this time, the city turns into a magical playground filled with snow, ice, music, and colorful lights. From February 6 to 15, 2026, the famous Québec Winter Carnival (Carnaval de Québec) will welcome visitors for its 72nd edition.

It is one of the biggest winter festivals in the world and a true celebration of Canadian winter culture.

During this special time, the city turns into a magical playground filled with snow, ice, music, and colorful lights. The Carnival is truly a citywide party. Streets, parks, and public squares come alive with ice sculptures, outdoor games, music, and live performances. Everywhere you go, you will see smiling people dressed in warm winter clothes, enjoying the season together.

The whole city takes part in the celebration, with activities happening in many locations, including Place de l’Assemblée-Nationale y Place George-V. No matter your age, there is always something fun to see or do.

The festival also has a long and rich history. It began in the late 1800s and has been held every year since 1955. That same year, the Carnival introduced its most famous symbol, Bonhomme Carnaval. This cheerful snowman mascot, with his red hat and colorful sash, has become one of the main attractions and the friendly face of the event, and a favorite character for visitors to meet and photograph.

Another highlight is the Night Parades, held on February 7 and February 14. These parades are full of bright lights, music, dancing, and giant moving floats. Families, couples, and friends will line the streets to watch the show and share the excitement. It is advisable to arrive early if you want a great view of this part of the carnival.

If you want to see something special, be sure to watch the ice canoe race on the St. Lawrence River on February 8. Teams will race across freezing water and moving ice using special canoes, pushing and paddling their way to the finish line. It is an exciting display of strength and teamwork, and a tradition you can only experience in Québec.

Throughout the city, you will also find beautiful snow and ice sculptures. Artists from different countries create amazing works of art, which will turn the streets into an outdoor beautiful museum. At the Carnival sites, you can enjoy snow slides, winter games, ice bars, and warm drinks like the local favorite, Caribou.

To enjoy most official Carnival sites, visitors aged 13 and over need the Effigy pass. This souvenir pass gives access to many activities and festival zones, while children 12 and under can enter for free. The 2026 Effigy is made in Québec using recycled maple sap tubing and often includes discount coupons for local attractions. Buying it in advance makes exploring the Carnival much easier.

In 2026, the Carnival will grow even bigger with “Carnaval en ville,” bringing special events to different neighborhoods and nearby towns. Visitors can also enjoy ticketed activities like spa parties, ice sculpture workshops, the famous snow bath, and even rappelling down the Château Frontenac.

It is a joyful celebration of winter, community, and creativity. Whether you love culture, food, music, or playing in the snow, the Carnival offers unforgettable memories and shows winter at its best in Québec City.
