ETIAS Still Is Not Live: What the European Commission Actually Says About the Launch Date

There is a persistent belief that travellers to Europe now need an ETIAS. They do not. The system has not launched, and the European Commission has not announced a date.

What does the Commission actually say?
Its official ETIAS page states that the system is currently not in operation and that no applications for travel authorisations are collected at this point.

It also commits to announcing a start date several months prior to launch. That is a specific commitment, and it means there will be substantial public notice before anything is required of travellers.

So the 2027 date I read about is wrong?
It is not confirmed. Various press reports have pointed to 2027, but no European Commission page states a launch year. Until the Commission announces a date, any specific date in circulation is speculation, however confidently it is presented.

The honest position is that the launch date is unknown.

What is ETIAS supposed to be?
Under EU law, ETIAS is an automated screening system, not a visa. It will apply to travellers who are visa-exempt for the Schengen area and Cyprus, requiring them to obtain an authorisation before travelling.

The design provides for an authorisation valid for three years, with most decisions returned within minutes. Cases requiring further checks may take up to 30 days.

Note the implication of that 30-day outer limit: when the system does launch, applying the night before a flight will not be sound practice for everyone.

Then what is the system everyone is being enrolled in at the border?
That is the Entry/Exit System, and it is a completely different thing.

EES became fully operational on 10 April 2026. It records biometric data at the border, a facial image and fingerprints for travellers aged 12 and over, replacing the passport stamp. It requires nothing from you in advance. There is nothing to apply for and nothing to pay. You simply present yourself at the border and are enrolled.

The two systems are frequently conflated, including in otherwise careful travel coverage. EES happens at the border and is live. ETIAS will happen before you travel and is not.

Can I apply for an ETIAS now to be safe?
No, because there is nothing to apply for. No application is being accepted by anyone, anywhere.

This is the practical warning. Any website offering to obtain, pre-register, reserve or expedite an ETIAS today is not selling a real product, because the product does not exist. Money paid to such a site buys nothing.

What should I do?
For travel to Europe today: nothing. Check your passport validity, expect biometric enrolment at the border under EES, and budget extra time for your first crossing.

For the future: wait for the Commission's announcement. There will be months of notice, and there is no advantage in acting early on a system that is not accepting applications.
