Thai Travellers Can Now Earn a Five-Year Schengen Visa: How the Cascade Works

The European Union has adopted more favourable Schengen visa rules for Thai nationals. Travellers with a good record can now move up from single-trip visas to multiple-entry visas lasting one, two and eventually five years. Here is how it works.

What is the cascade?
A sequence of increasingly long multiple-entry visas, each earned by using the previous one properly. The EU uses cascades for selected countries to reward travellers with a clean history.

Who qualifies?
Thai nationals resident in Thailand who have obtained and lawfully used a Schengen visa within the past two years.

Lawfully used is the key phrase. It means the visa was used for its purpose, within its dates, and without overstaying.

What are the steps?
A traveller who meets the condition can be issued a one-year multiple-entry visa.

Frequent travellers who use that properly can then progress to a two-year visa, and after that to a five-year visa.

Does it happen automatically?
No. Each visa is still a new application, assessed by the consulate. The cascade sets out what a traveller with a good record can expect; it does not remove the assessment.

What can stop me moving up?
Any overstay. The EU's announcement specifies travellers with no history of overstaying.

Using the visa for a purpose other than the one it was issued for.

A gap. The previous visa must fall within the past two years. A traveller whose last Schengen visa was three years ago starts again.

Does a five-year visa change the 90-day rule?
No. A multiple-entry visa still allows a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. Longer validity means fewer applications, not longer stays.

What about my passport?
A multiple-entry visa cannot be issued beyond the validity of the passport it is placed in. A traveller with a passport expiring in 18 months cannot receive a five-year visa in it. Renew first if you expect to qualify for a longer visa.

What should I do?
Keep records of your previous Schengen trips: the visa, and evidence of the dates you entered and left. Make sure your passport has enough validity for the visa length you are hoping for, and apply in good time before your trip.
