The KAZA Univisa Still Covers Only Zambia and Zimbabwe

The KAZA Univisa is often described as a single visa for five countries in southern Africa. It is not. As the Zambian immigration authorities set out, it covers two: Zambia and Zimbabwe.

What the Univisa is
A multiple-entry visa that lets eligible travellers move between Zambia and Zimbabwe, most commonly around Victoria Falls, without obtaining a separate visa for each country.

It takes its name from the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, which spans five countries. That is the source of the confusion.

What it covers
Zambia and Zimbabwe only. Angola, Botswana and Namibia are named by the Zambian authorities as possible future participants, but they have not joined.

A traveller planning to continue into Botswana or Namibia needs to check those countries' own requirements separately.

How long it lasts
Up to 30 days within any 12-month period, with multiple entries between the two countries.

That is stricter than it sounds. It is not 30 days per trip; it is 30 days in a year.

Where it is issued
At designated entry points in each country, including the international airports at Lusaka, Livingstone, Harare and Victoria Falls, and the Victoria Falls and Kazungula land borders.

What to do
If your trip is limited to Zambia and Zimbabwe and fits within 30 days, the Univisa may suit it. If your itinerary extends to Botswana, Namibia or Angola, plan those countries separately and do not assume the Univisa covers them.
