China's Visa-Free List Runs to End-2026: The Conditions Travellers Keep Missing

China's unilateral visa-free policy now covers more than 40 nationalities, and the arrangement has been extended through 31 December 2026. Sweden was added to the list with effect from 10 November 2025.

The headline is genuinely good news. The conditions attached to it are where travellers run into trouble.

The 30-day cap
Visa-free entry allows a stay of up to 30 days. It is not an open-ended permission, and it is not extendable simply by wishing it were.

Travellers planning a longer stay in China need a visa, and need to arrange it before departure rather than discovering the limit at immigration.

The purpose restriction
The policy covers specified purposes: business, tourism, family visits, cultural exchange and transit.

That list is narrower than "anything you might want to do in China". Work, study and journalism are not on it. Travellers whose actual purpose falls outside the permitted categories are not covered by the arrangement, regardless of nationality.

The policy has an expiry date
This is the condition most often overlooked, and the most consequential.

The extension runs to 31 December 2026. It is not permanent. It has been extended before and may be extended again, but the arrangement as it currently stands has an end date written into it.

There is a live precedent for what happens when one lapses. China introduced visa-free entry for ordinary passport holders from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay as a trial running from 1 June 2025 to 31 May 2026. That trial period has now ended, and travellers from those five countries should confirm the current position directly rather than relying on articles published while it was running.

The lesson generalises: a visa-free policy is a policy, and policies expire.

Visa-free is not the same as guaranteed entry
Entering without a visa means you may travel to the border and be assessed. The immigration officer makes the admission decision, and can ask about your purpose, your itinerary and your means of support.

The transit option
Separately from the country list, China operates a 240-hour (ten-day) visa-free transit scheme for travellers from 55 countries. On 5 November 2025 the number of eligible entry and exit ports expanded from 60 to 65, across 24 provincial-level regions.

China also moved its entry card online from 20 November 2025, allowing visitors to complete it before arrival instead of on paper at the border.

What to do
Confirm your nationality is currently on the list, close to your travel date rather than at the planning stage.

Check your purpose against the permitted categories honestly.

Count your days against the 30-day cap, including arrival and departure.

And if your trip runs beyond 31 December 2026, confirm the position again before you book: the current arrangement does not extend past that date on its own.
