ETIAS Is Due in the Fourth Quarter: What the EU Has Officially Said, and What It Has Not

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System is the most anticipated change to European travel in years, and the most misreported. Here is what the EU institutions have actually said as of October 2026.

Is ETIAS in operation?
No. The European Commission states that ETIAS is not yet in operation. Travellers do not need it for any trip today.

When is it planned to start?
The Council of the EU, in its briefing for interior ministers in June 2026, said entry into operation is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.

That is a planning statement. It is not a launch date, and no launch date has been announced.

Will there be warning before it starts?
Yes. The Commission has committed to announcing the start date several months before ETIAS begins operating. As of today, that announcement has not been made.

I have read that it has been delayed to 2027. Is that true?
Some press reports say a 2026 launch is no longer feasible. No EU institution has confirmed that. The accurate position is that no date has been set and that the advance notice the Commission promised has not yet been given.

Who will need it?
Nationals of countries whose citizens can visit the Schengen area without a visa, for short stays. That includes travellers from the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and many others. It will not replace the Schengen visa for nationalities who need one.

What will it involve?
An online application before travel, linked to the passport, with a charge for most adult applicants. Once approved, it will be valid for several years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

As with every authorisation of this type, a new passport will mean a new application.

Is ETIAS the same as the Entry/Exit System?
No. The Entry/Exit System is already operating. It records non-EU travellers' entries and exits electronically and has replaced passport stamping. ETIAS is a separate, pre-travel authorisation that has not started.

Can I apply now?
No. There is no official application route open. Any website currently taking ETIAS applications or payments is not the EU system.

What should I do?
Nothing yet, except watch for the official announcement. When the Commission sets a date, there will be months of notice.

Treat any site offering ETIAS today with suspicion, and keep your passport's expiry date in mind: a passport that expires soon after launch would mean applying twice.
