Transiting Through Doha? There Is a 24-Hour Limit, Even With a Transit Hotel

Hamad International Airport in Doha is one of the world's busiest connecting hubs, and many passengers never leave the terminal. There is, however, a limit on how long they can stay airside, and a booking at the airport's own hotel does not change it.

How long can I stay in the transit area?
No more than 24 hours between flights. Official UK guidance states this applies even if you are booked into the transit hotel inside the airport.

Why would I be there longer than 24 hours?
Usually because of how the trip was booked. Separate tickets, a deliberately long layover to save on fares, or an overnight connection that turns into two nights after a schedule change.

What if my connection is longer than 24 hours?
Then you cannot simply wait airside. A stay beyond the transit limit means entering Qatar, which needs permission to enter for your nationality.

Plan for this when you book, not when you land.

Does the transit hotel count as being in Qatar?
No. The hotel is inside the transit area. Staying there does not mean you have entered the country, and it does not extend the 24-hour limit.

What happens if my onward flight is delayed past 24 hours?
Speak to your airline straight away. A disruption caused by the carrier is handled differently from a booking that was always too long, but you should not assume the limit will be waived without anyone telling you.

Is my baggage checked?
Yes. Transit baggage is scanned, and official guidance warns that even trace amounts of substances that are illegal in Qatar can lead to arrest, including for passengers who are only connecting. Certain prescription medicines are also controlled.

Does any of this apply on the way home?
Yes. The limit applies to every transit, outbound and return.

What should I do?
Check the time between flights on your itinerary for each direction. If any connection in Doha is longer than 24 hours, arrange permission to enter Qatar before you travel, or change the booking.

Check your medicines and anything you carry against Qatar's rules, even if you are not leaving the airport.
