Kyrgyzstan's 30-Days-in-60 Rule and the Five-Day Registration Trap

Kyrgyzstan is one of the easier countries in Central Asia to enter, and that is exactly why travellers get its rules wrong. The visa-free stay comes with a rolling limit and a registration deadline that most people only learn about when they are already late.

How long can I stay without a visa?
For eligible nationalities, up to 30 calendar days without a visa within each 60-day period.

Read that as two limits, not one. Any single stay can last up to 30 days, and the total time spent in the country within a 60-day window cannot exceed 30 days either.

Can I leave and come back to restart the clock?
Not in the way many travellers assume. A quick crossing into Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan and back does not give you a fresh 30 days if you have already used them within the current 60-day period. The window looks back over the previous 60 days.

This is the rule that catches overlanders moving between Bishkek, Almaty and the Fergana Valley, who cross the same borders several times in a few weeks.

What is the registration requirement?
Visitors staying longer than 30 days must register online with the State Registration Service within five days of arriving.

Five days is short. A traveller who arrives intending to stay three weeks and then decides to extend has, in practice, already missed the deadline unless they registered on arrival.

What if I need longer than the visa-free allowance?
Then the visa-free route is the wrong one. Travellers planning a longer stay, or a stay for a purpose other than tourism, need a visa arranged in advance for that purpose.

What happens if I overstay?
A fine, and potentially deportation. Deportation creates a record that can follow a traveller through later applications, in Kyrgyzstan and elsewhere.

Do I need anything else on arrival?
A passport with enough validity for the stay, and the ability to show where you are staying. Border officers can ask about the purpose and length of the trip.

What should I do?
Write down every entry and exit date while you travel. Count back 60 days from any planned re-entry and add up the days already spent in the country.

If there is any chance your stay will exceed 30 days, register within five days of arrival, not on day 25.
