The Six-Month Passport Rule, and the Official List That Exempts Some Travellers From It

Passport validity is one of the most common reasons travellers are turned away at check-in, and one of the least understood. The rule most people have heard of is six months. What they have not heard of is the official list that exempts many nationalities from it, at least for the United States.

The United States rule
US law generally requires visitors to hold a passport valid for six months beyond their intended stay.

In practice, US Customs and Border Protection publishes a list of countries that have agreed their passports are treated as valid for six months beyond the printed expiry date. Nationals of those countries need a passport that is valid only for the length of their stay in the United States.

The list is long, covering more than a hundred countries, and it is updated periodically. The most recent version was published on 18 December 2025.

Why the list matters
Two travellers with passports expiring on the same day can have different answers. One can travel; the other cannot. The difference is nationality, and whether that country is on the list.

Other countries are stricter
The US list is unusual. Most countries that apply a validity rule do not publish exemptions.

Bahrain requires at least six months of validity after arrival. Kuwait requires six months. The Philippines requires six months beyond the stay for visa-free visitors. Israel requires three months from arrival.

Some countries also require blank pages for entry stamps or visas, which is a separate check.

Who enforces it
The airline, before you board. Carriers check validity against industry data at check-in, because they are responsible for returning passengers who are refused entry. A border officer never sees a passenger who was turned away at the departure gate.

What to do
Check your passport's expiry date against your destination's own rule before you book, not before you pack. If you are close to the limit, renew first, then deal with any visa or travel authorisation on the new passport.

Verified against the US Customs and Border Protection six-month passport validity bulletin of 18 December 2025, checked 1 October 2026.
