Visa Requirements for Australian Citizens

Australian citizens traveling abroad must apply for an appropriate visa based on their destination. This can be done in person or by securing an eVisa, getting an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), acquiring a Visa on Arrival (VOA), or traveling visa-free to certain countries.

For 47 countries, Australian citizens can apply for either an eVisa or an ETA online.

A VOA is available for 40 countries. Some countries require a sticker or stamped visa. For that, the applicants must visit the respective embassy or consulate. Some countries may offer online appointment scheduling, depending on their specific policies.

Regardless of visa requirements, Australian travelers must have a valid passport with a minimum validity of six (6) months from the date of entry.

Australian citizens also get reciprocal Working Holiday Visa arrangements with numerous countries. These agreements are subject to the laws and regulations of each destination and may be updated periodically.

Ranked 7th globally, the Australian passport grants holders visa-free access to 111 countries.

As visa requirements vary by country,  we recommend that travelers review the specific entry regulations of their destination before applying.

Countries Offering eVisa and ETA to Australians

The eVisa is an Electronic Visa that can be applied for online. This is convenient as there is no need to visit the embassy or consulate of the destination country. Once approved, it can be saved on a smartphone or printed for presentation at the airport upon arrival.

An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a pre-travel permit that allows entry without applying for a visa in advance. Instead, travelers can get their visa directly from immigration authorities after arriving in the destination country.

Like the eVisa, the ETA can be applied for online and will be sent to your email. However, unlike the eVisa, the ETA is valid for a limited period. Travelers must enter the destination country within this timeframe to complete the visa process.

If the timeframe is unmet, the ETA becomes invalid, and a new application must be submitted.
