Jordan's 14-Day Rule: Register With the Police or Pay a Fine

Most visitors to Jordan never encounter this. Anyone staying beyond two weeks does, and a surprising number find out only when they are leaving.

What is the rule?
Since 1 October 2025, any visitor staying in Jordan for longer than 14 days must report to the nearest police residency-extension office and register. Failure to register carries a fine.

Does this replace my visa?
No, and this is where the confusion sits. Jordan's standard visit visa obtained on arrival is valid for three months. The registration requirement is a separate obligation that sits on top of it.

So a traveller can hold a perfectly valid three-month visa and still be in breach for not having registered on day fifteen. The visa gives you permission to be in the country. The registration tells the authorities you are still there.

Who does it apply to?
Visitors staying longer than 14 days. The trigger is the length of your stay, not the length of your visa and not your nationality.

When exactly do I have to do it?
Once your stay passes 14 days. The practical approach is to treat it as a two-week deadline from arrival rather than something to attend to when convenient, because the fine attaches to the failure rather than to any warning.

Where do I go?
The nearest police residency-extension office. Jordan also permits stays to be extended online for up to six months, which is a separate process from the initial registration.

What happens if I do not register?
A fine. In practice it is usually raised at the point of departure, which is the worst possible moment to discover an obligation you did not know existed, and the point at which you have the least ability to resolve it calmly.

Who gets caught by this?
Three groups, consistently.

Long-stay tourists. Jordan is a country people combine with Israel, Egypt or Saudi Arabia, and a month-long regional trip based in Amman crosses the threshold easily.

Volunteers and students on short programmes, who think in terms of their programme dates rather than immigration checkpoints.

Business travellers on extended assignments who were told their visa was valid for three months and reasonably concluded that settled the matter.

What should travellers do?
Count your days from arrival and set a reminder for day twelve, not day fourteen.

If your trip is genuinely under two weeks, this does not apply to you and you can ignore it.

If it is longer, or if it might become longer, treat the registration as part of the trip rather than an afterthought. Extensions are available online, but the initial obligation to register is not something an extension retrospectively cures.

And keep whatever documentation you are given. Proof that you registered is what resolves a question at the airport in thirty seconds instead of thirty minutes.
