Le 2026 Dakar Rally is one of the most famous off-road races in the world. It will take place in Saudi Arabia from January 3 to January 17, 2026. During this event, drivers and riders will travel almost 8,000 kilometres. They will race across deserts and other very difficult land, facing many tough challenges along the way. This will be the 48th edition of the Dakar Rally and the seventh time Saudi Arabia will be hosting it.
The Dakar Rally is not like a normal race. It is a rally raid, which means drivers and riders must travel long distances over rough ground. Competitors must use skill, strength, navigation, and strategy to reach each checkpoint on time. The event is known for being extremely hard on both humans and machines.
Start and Finish in Yanbu
The rally will start and end in Yanbu City. Yanbu is a port city on the Red Sea. On January 3, racers will begin with a short prologue stage to set the starting order and warm up for the main competition. The full racing stages will begin the next day. After two weeks of tough racing, all competitors aim to cross the finish line back in Yanbu on January 17.

Challenging Route Across Saudi Arabia
The route for Dakar 2026 has been designed to test every skill needed in rally-raid racing. Participants will ride and drive through sand dunes, rocky tracks, gravel roads, and desert plains. The 2026 route is notable because it avoids the extremely remote ‘Empty Quarter’ desert and instead goes through different regions like Al Bahah, ’Asir, Jizan, Ha’il, and Al-Qassim. It will definitely give variety to the race. The rally has 13 racing stages and one short prologue at the start. Together, they cover almost 8,000 kilometres. In many parts of the rally, racers are timed to see who is the fastest. There will also be a rest day in Riyadh, the capital, to give racers a short break before the second half of the competition.
Tough Marathon Stages
One special feature of the 2026 rally is the inclusion of marathon-style stages. These are very difficult because competitors must manage their own repairs and supplies without help from any support teams. These stages push racers to survive and strategize, not just race fast.
Big Participant Field
The Dakar Rally attracts drivers and riders from many countries. For 2026, more than 800 competitors from nearly 70 nations are expected to take part, along with hundreds of vehicles in different classes. These include:
- Motorcycles
- Cars and buggies
- Side-by-Side vehicles (SSVs)
- Trucks
- Quads
- Classic vehicles
The rally also starts the 2026 World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) season. This means racers can earn important championship points at the very first big race of the year.
Le Dakar Rally is more than just a race. Instead, it is a true test of endurance, skill, navigation, and teamwork. During the rally, racers must carefully follow maps and GPS systems while driving across difficult desert terrain. At the same time, they must handle long and tiring days in very tough conditions. Because of these challenges, simply finishing the Dakar Rally is considered a major achievement in the world of motorsport.
