Visa Requirements for German Citizens

When traveling internationally, German citizens may need to apply for a visa. The methods include in-person applications, eVisas, Electronic Travel Authorizations (ETAs), Visa on Arrival (VOA), or, sometimes, traveling visa-free.

German passport holders can apply online for an eVisa or ETA for 49 countries. Additionally, 29 countries offer VOA options. For sticker or stamped visas, travelers must visit the respective country’s embassy or consulate. Some embassies or consulates may allow online appointment scheduling, depending on the country’s policies.

To enter a foreign country, German nationals must have a passport valid for at least six (6)  months from the date of entry, whether a visa is required or not.

With a globally ranked 3rd passport, German citizens can visit 122 countries visa-free.

Visa requirements vary by destination, so we advise you to check the specific country’s regulations before starting the application process.

Countries Offering eVisa and ETA to Germans

An eVisa is a digital visa issued online, allowing travelers to get authorization without visiting the destination country’s embassy or consulate. It can be stored on a smartphone or printed and presented at the airport.

An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a travel permit that allows entry into a destination country without requiring a visa in advance. Upon arrival, travelers can get their visa directly from immigration authorities.

Like an eVisa, an ETA can be applied online and delivered via email. However, while an eVisa allows flexible travel within its validity period, an ETA is time-sensitive.

Travelers must enter the destination country within the specified timeframe to get their visa. If the timeframe expires, the ETA becomes invalid, and a new application is required.
