Kuwait's Tourist eVisa and the Extra Arrival Checks Some Visitors Face

Kuwait has moved its visit visas online, through a Ministry of Interior system that covers tourism, family visits, business and transit. Eligibility, though, is not only about nationality. Here is what travellers need to know.

Who can get a Kuwaiti tourist visa online?
Nationals of a defined list of countries, which includes the EU and Schengen states, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and several others. Residents of other Gulf states in certain professions can also qualify.

The list is published by the Ministry of Interior and can change, so check it at the time you apply rather than relying on an older summary.

How long can I stay?
The tourist visa is single entry. It must be used within one month of being issued, and permits a stay of up to three months.

Separate multiple-entry visas exist for travellers with a reason to visit repeatedly, with a cap on the length of each stay.

Does place of birth matter?
It can. Official UK travel advice warns that Kuwaiti authorities may apply additional checks to some British nationals on arrival, particularly those born outside the UK, including in parts of the Middle East and South Asia.

The same guidance says this can mean delays, further questioning, or in some cases refusal of entry. British citizens born in certain countries are also excluded from obtaining a visa on arrival and must arrange one beforehand.

The principle is worth understanding beyond the British case. A passport establishes nationality. It does not always settle how a traveller is assessed at the border.

What documents should I carry?
A return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation, and a passport valid for at least six months. Travellers should have printed or easily accessible copies, not only bookings in an email inbox.

What happens if I overstay?
Fines accrue for every day beyond the permitted stay and must be settled before departure. An overstay also creates a record that can affect future visas.

What should I do?
Check the current eligibility list for your nationality. If you were born outside your country of nationality, arrange your visa in advance rather than relying on arrival, and allow time for additional questions at the border.

Carry your return ticket and accommodation details in a form you can show quickly.
