Visa Requirements for Croatian Citizens

For Croatian citizens, a passport is more than just a travel document, but it unlocks access to 199 destinations worldwide. However, traveling abroad often requires more than a passport, as entry rules vary depending on the destination.

While Croatians can enter many countries without a visa, some destinations require an eVisa, an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), a Visa on Arrival (VoA), or a traditional embassy-issued visa. The specific requirement depends on each country’s immigration regulations

At present, Croatian nationals can apply online for an eVisa or eTA in 56 countries and get a Visa on Arrival for 12 countries, while a few destinations still require a traditional sticker visa.

For traveling abroad, all Croatian travelers must carry a valid passport,  typically with at least six (6) months of remaining validity from the date of their entry. The Croatian passport is currently ranked 6th worldwide, granting visa-free access to 113 destinations.

As Croatia is one of the members of the European Union (EU), its citizens can move freely among other EU member states under visa-exemption rules, making regional travel simple and convenient.

As the regulations and visa requirements are different from one country to another, it is always advised to check the specific entry regulations for your destination before the application process.

Countries Offering eVisa and ETA to Croatian

Applying for an eVisa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) makes international travel much easier. The process is entirely online. All you need to do is complete the application and upload the required documents. Once approved, the visa or authorization is sent directly to you via email. This means you don’t need to visit an embassy at all.

Regarding the subject of differences, an eVisa (Electronic Visa) is linked to your passport number and is valid for a specific duration. Once approved, it will be sent to your email, and when arrived you must present a printed copy or the digital version on your phone.

An eTA works as a travel pre-approval, and it is linked to your passport number. Instead of getting a traditional visa before traveling, you simply get permission to enter upon arrival in the destination country.

Unlike an eVisa, an eTA is only valid for a short time. So travelers must enter the country within that period. If they don’t, the authorization expires, and they must apply again.

General Visa Requirements for Croatian Citizens

No matter where your destination is, most countries share similar visa requirements for Croatian travellers. These are some common documents or criteria you’ll likely need:

  • Valid Passport: Must have at least six (6) months’ validity beyond the planned date of entry or beyond your planned stay in the destination country.
  • Visa Application Form: A completed visa application form filled out online or offline at an embassy or consulate, depending on the destination country. Travelers have to provide their personal details, travel plan, supporting documents, and purpose of the visit on that form.
  • Photograph: One or more recent passport-sized photos, usually taken within the last three months. The face must be shown clearly in that photo and the background should be plain white.
  • Flight Tickets: You may be asked to provide proof of travel in certain countries. This covers your tickets for flights, both incoming and outgoing.
  • Proof of Accommodation/Stay: Proof of where travelers are going to stay during the trip. It can include hotel reservations, rental agreements, or the address of the host or family if you’re going to stay with them.

Additional documents such as financial statements, invitation letters, or travel insurance may also be required, depending on the destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many countries can we visit with a Croatian passport?

Croatian passport holders can access 199 destinations worldwide. Because the Croatian passport ranks 6th globally, citizens can travel to 113 countries visa-free.

Which country visa is free for a Croatian?

Croatian citizens can travel to 113 countries without a visa. (The full list is provided above.)

Can a Croatian hold three passports?

No. A person can normally hold only one valid Croatian passport at a time. In rare situations (for example, frequent business travel requiring multiple visas), authorities may issue a second passport, but not three simultaneously.

What is the best way to prove citizenship?

The most reliable way to prove Croatian citizenship is by presenting an official government document. This can be a valid Croatian passport, a Croatian national ID card (Osobna iskaznica), or a Domovnica (certificate of citizenship) issued by the authorities.

Can a Croatian have dual citizenship?

Yes. Croatia allows dual (multiple) citizenship, meaning a Croatian national can legally hold another country’s citizenship at the same time.

Do Croatian citizens face transit visa requirements?

Usually no, especially when transiting through the Schengen Area or many international airports.

However, some countries may still require a transit visa depending on nationality rules and travel route, so travelers should check the specific airport and country requirements before departure.

Do Croatians need a visa for Europe (Schengen)?

No. Croatia is part of the Schengen Area, so Croatian citizens can travel freely to all Schengen countries without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Do Croatian citizens need travel insurance when applying for visas?

For visa-required destinations, especially Schengen visas for non-EU travelers (when Croatians apply abroad for other countries), travel insurance is often mandatory.

Even when not required, it is strongly recommended for medical and emergency coverage.

Can I renew my Croatian passport abroad?

Yes. Croatian citizens can renew their passport at a Croatian embassy or consulate in the country where they live or stay.

What should I do if I lose my Croatian passport abroad?

If you lose your Croatian passport while traveling, first report the loss to the local police and obtain a report if possible. Then immediately contact the nearest Croatian embassy or consulate for assistance. They will help you apply for an emergency travel document (return certificate) or a replacement passport. Once issued, you can use this document to return home or continue your journey, depending on the circumstances and permissions.
