Visa Requirements for Irish Citizens

Irish citizens enjoy one of the world’s most powerful passports that grants easy access to numerous destinations across the globe. With the passport ranking 3rd globally, Irish citizens can visit 115 countries without a visa.

However, for other countries, you may still need a visa. It can be an eVisa, an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), a Visa on Arrival (VoA), or, in some cases, a traditional embassy visa.

For quick and convenient travel to many destinations, you can apply online for digital visas like eVisas or eTAs. But for those destinations that require only a traditional visa, you may need to visit the embassy or consulate and apply in person.

Whatever the visa type is, or whichever destination you are travelling to, you must have an Irish passport that is valid for at least six (6) months beyond your intended date of arrival for international travel.

Since visa regulations can change, travelers are always advised to check the latest entry requirements before departure.

Countries Offering eVisa and eTA to Irish Citizens

An eVisa is an electronic visa that can be applied for entirely online. During the process, travelers need to complete the form, upload required documents, and receive approval by email. No embassy visit is required for eVisas. Once approved, the eVisa will be sent via email. It can either be printed or saved on a smartphone and presented at the airport upon arrival.

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) works similarly, but it’s not a typical visa. It’s one kind of authorization that allows travelers to visit the destination without needing a visa in advance. With this, travellers can get their visa from the immigration officer after arriving at the airport or border.

However, an eTA always comes with a time frame, and travelers must reach their destination within the time period. Otherwise, the eTA gets invalid, and travelers need to apply for a new eTA.
