Visa Requirements for Vietnamese Citizens

When planning to travel abroad, Vietnamese citizens may face different entry requirements depending on the destination. Some countries allow visa-free entry, while others require a traditional visa obtained through an embassy. However, many countries now offer electronic visa (eVisa), Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), or Visa on Arrival (VoA) options, which have made international travel more convenient than ever.

Currently, Vietnamese citizens are eligible to apply for an eVisa or eTA in 67 countries, and they can get a Visa on Arrival in 13 countries. Meanwhile, 16 destinations offer visa-free entry, and 102 countries still require a traditional visa.

To travel internationally, Vietnamese nationals need to have a valid passport with at least six (6) months of validity from the date of entry.

As visa rules differ greatly from one country to another, it is always advisable to confirm extra requirements before making travel plans.

Countries Offering eVisa and ETA to Vietnamese Citizens

An eVisa is an electronic visa that can be applied for completely online. Applicants do not need to visit an embassy or consulate. Once approved, the eVisa is sent by email and can be presented digitally or in print upon arrival.

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is slightly different. It is a pre-entry approval that grants permission to board a flight to the destination country. Travelers complete the application online, and once approved, they can finalize their visa process upon arrival.

While an eVisa remains valid for months or its approved period, an eTA comes with a certain timeframe in which travellers need to reach the destination and get their visa approved. If this time is over, the eTA becomes invalid, and travelers need to apply for a fresh one.
